Maurten — Fuel like a Pro

ree

Maurten is at the front line of triathlon. It is the fuelling ecosystem behind some of the biggest performances and athletes in the sport — Gustav Iden, Kristian Blummenfelt, Alex Yee, Kate Waugh, Lucy Charles-Barclay, Flora Duffy and many more. Maurten is the official fuel partner to the T100 World Tour and the IRONMAN Global Series.

Maurten works closely with the athletes, capturing the blood, sweat, and tears of hard training to inform the fuelling development process. Often there at the finish line, the roadside, the pool, the track, the turbo, and the gym — early morning to late at night. Establishing the benchmark for sports fuels requires an approach that’s integrated with the lifestyles and challenges of athletes. Put simply, Maurten is athlete-first — always.

Introducing Maurten’s Hydrogel Technology

Science has shown that consumption of carbohydrates during training and racing improves performance capacity.

But there is a catch.

As exercise intensity increases, the body's capacity for processing and absorbing high-carbohydrate fuel decreases. Gastric emptying and water absorption slow down. Digesting fuel now becomes more challenging, increasing the risk of gastrointestinal discomfort, and performance might be compromised. Maurten’s sports fuels with Hydrogel Technology are developed to optimise the intake and absorption of carbohydrates during higher intensity activity. The unique hydrogels help mitigate the GI issues.

A hydrogel is a network of polymer chains that can hold a large amount of water while maintaining their structure. This structure is critical to the functionality of Maurten hydrogels in the gut. The 3D, semi-solid state of the hydrogel behaves a bit like a sponge, with lots of microscopic holes. The carbohydrate component fills this porous structure within the hydrogel.

At the low pH of the stomach, Maurten’s hydrogels hold their structure, rather than being broken down. This makes it easier for athletes to tolerate the consumption of high concentrations of carbohydrates during sport and fuel high-intensity performance. The hydrogel facilitates smoother, more controlled, and faster transport through the GI tract, from the stomach to the small intestine.  Once in the intestines, the hydrogel dissolves, releasing the carbohydrates to be absorbed as fuel for the training session or race.

By fuelling with the right amount of carbohydrates per hour — especially during training — our bodies can adapt and get used to it, reducing the risk of discomfort in the stomach on race day.

Maurten's Hydrogel Technology introduced a new way of fuelling. One that cracked the code for getting high-carbohydrate fuel through the stomach and into the intestines during exercise while minimising stress and discomfort.

Less is more

By focusing on a limited number of high-quality ingredients and avoiding unnecessary

additives — no colours, flavours, or preservatives — Maurten establishes clean, high-performance sports fuels. The conditions required for producing Hydrogel Technology have been extensively refined — what seem like straightforward solutions for the athlete are the result of an extensive and technical development process.

Each application of hydrogel in the Maurten ecosystem is unique to the product purpose and function.

Gel and Drink Mix

Mixed with 500ml of water, Drink Mix 320 and 160 instantly convert to hydrogel in the acidity of the stomach, encapsulating the carbohydrates. The hydrogel then enables a smooth transportation of the sports drink through the stomach to the intestine — faster — where the water, salt and carbohydrates are absorbed.

Consuming liquid fuel during a triathlon is important but challenging. Comfort matters. Large volumes of liquid can cause a sloshing or bouncing sensation in the stomach. It’s a feeling of discomfort that limits performance. By changing from a liquid to a hydrogel, Drink Mix makes it easier for athletes to consume liquid fuel with high concentrations of carbohydrates and maintain high-intensity training or racing performance.

The Gel is unique. The hydrogel creates a firmer structure — not a runny syrup like traditional energy gels. In the stomach, with the carbohydrates encapsulated by the hydrogel, it enables a smooth transportation of fuel through to the intestine where they are absorbed. Again, less is more — six ingredients, no preservatives, no artificial flavours, and no colours.
